The Wig Buyers Guide

Wig Buyers Guide

Choosing a wig requires some understanding and appreciation for the finer details. If you are new to wearing wigs then this helpful wig buyers guide will take you through all the major categories in selecting a wig... the style, the cap size, the cap construction, the hair type and finally choosing the colour.

The Style

The first step in choosing a wig is deciding on which style to go for. Start by selecting a hair length (short, mid length, long), then texture (straight, wavy, curly) and finally a hairstyle (short, bobs, bangs, layered, long). If you are new to wearing a wig, then we recommend choosing a style you are familiar with. Creating a completely new look can always be done later on as you become more accustom to wearing wigs... that's when the fun begins. Just imagine the flexibility and endless styles you will be able to create. Many of our clients ultimately end up having a lot of fun experimenting with a variety of different looks.

The Cap Size

Even though average size wigs tend to fit the majority of people, there is also quite a few wigs in our range that come in petite and large sizes. The majority of our wig collection also come with adjustable velcro straps that give up to half an inch so that you can achieve a more comfortable and secure fit.

To determine which size wig is right for you, measure the circumference of your head from the front hairline, then behind your ear, then to the nape of your neck, then to your other ear and finally back to your front hairline. Consult the measurement chart below to determine which cap size best suits the circumference of your head.

NOTE - Sizes may vary slightly with different brands and not all wigs are available in all cap sizes.

The Cap Construction

The base of a wig is referred to as a cap. This is the material to which the hair is attached in order to create the wig. When choosing a wig, it is important to consider the different types of cap constructions - each material has a specific method of attaching the hair to the cap and offers its own set of advantages.

  • Lace Front - creates the illusion of natural hair growth along the hairline.

  • Monofilament - offers hair parting versatility.

  • Open Cap - creates breathability of heat from the scalp.

  • Hand Tied - allows each hair to move freely for better styling options.

  • Traditional - gives the hair volume at the crown.

The Hair Type

You're probably wondering which hair is right for you. Well, possibly both. Both human hair and synthetic fiber each have their advantages and limitations making them both the right choice at different times.

Human hair offers the most natural look and feel and is remarkably soft with a shine and movement that is not easily duplicated in synthetic hair. It is also extremely versatile. Human hair can be cut and styled to suit your personal tastes. Even though it is more expensive, with proper care it is more durable and can last more than a year.

Synthetic hair has come a long way in recent years, due to technological advances. The most appealing aspect to synthetic hair is it can often be worn right out of the box with little to no styling. The fiber used has a memory for wave, curl and volume, letting the hair bounce back into place with minimal effort and the curl pattern is permanently set. However, what synthetic hair offers in ease it lacks in versatility. It cannot be styled to look many different ways like human hair. Only special heat defiant synthetic hair is heat style-able to change the curl pattern. Synthetic hair is also less durable than human hair. With proper care you can expect a synthetic hair wig to last about 4-6 months and heat defiant synthetic hair 2-3 months with daily wear.

As most styles offer a range of colour choices, you can now begin to review the different colour options available. If you're new to wearing wigs, consider staying close to your natural shade to ease the transition.
