Open Cap Wig Cap

Open cap wigs are also known as “capless” wigs because of their light weight and airy, cool feel. Open cap construction provides a secure, comfortable fit by combining featherlight, close fitting cap materials with a well ventilated design. These styles offer many benefits for for first time wig wearers.

The basic wig cap is formed by an elasticised framework of bands. Hair stitched onto fabric strips, or wefts, is secured to the the bands of the cap. Each weft of hair is volumised with short, finely textured fibers stitched to the “root,” preventing any visible gaps and adding shape and body to the style. The part is backed with sturdy lace or open wefts, while the nape and sides of the cap are open between the bands.

Because the primary structure of the wig is formed by the elastic bands and the wefts of hair, an open cap wig provides superb ventilation and very light overall weight. The minimal weight of this wig construction also minimises pressure and friction against the scalp. For example, a short pixie style open cap wig can weigh 50 percent less than a similar wig with a traditional full cap.

Open cap construction is often combined with other cap construction features, such as lace fronts, monofilament parts and crowns, and hand-tied portions of the wig. For instance, a lace front wig may have open construction throughout the cap.

Open cap styles lend themselves to shake-and-go wearability. Because of their lightweight materials and volumised wefts of hair, open cap wigs require little re-styling on a daily basis and keep the head cool and comfortable even in warm climates. The low maintenance care of an open cap wig also results in extended life for the wig. Plus, in general, open cap wigs are less expensive than fully hand-tied wigs.
